OOH (out-of-home) advertising is any advertising people see while they are outside their homes: billboards on the road, screens at junctions, banners on bridges, posters in malls and ads on buses. It is the oldest advertising medium and, in Egypt, still one of the most visible: Cairo’s traffic means drivers and passengers spend a long time looking at the same few kilometres of road every day.
OOH vs DOOH
Classic OOH is printed: a vinyl face on a billboard that stays up for the whole booking, usually a month. DOOH (digital out-of-home) is the same idea on a screen. On a screen you normally buy a slot in a loop shared with other advertisers, so the price is lower than owning the whole face, and the creative can change by time of day. More on screens in our look at DOOH trends in Egypt.
The main OOH formats in Egypt
These counts are the boards listed on SkylineDOOH in October 2026, out of 8,489 in total. They are listings, not a census of every board in the country, but they show what the market mostly sells:
- Unipoles (2,880 listed). A large face on a single tall pole, the typical highway and Ring Road format, often double-sided.
- Standard billboards (2,437). Mid-sized boards on streets and junctions, from small 3×4 m faces up to 6×3 m and larger.
- Mega walls (686). Huge prints on the side of a building, seen from far away and from bridges.
- Rooftop boards (391). Boards on top of buildings, usually facing a main road or a bridge.
- Digital screens (338). LED screens at junctions, on buildings and in malls.
- Light boxes (307) and mirrors (303). Smaller lit formats close to eye level, common in malls and on pavements.
- Wall boards, bakias and transit ads. 272, 170 and 149 listings respectively.
Our guide to billboard sizes and types explains which format suits which budget.
Where the boards are
Cairo dominates: 6,371 of the 8,489 listed boards. The North Coast follows with 666, most of them for the summer season, then Alexandria (284) and Giza (256). Inside Cairo the densest areas are the Ring Road, New Cairo and the 90th Street, Nasr City, Heliopolis and the bridges across the Nile. You can see every one of them on a map, district by district, in our outdoor advertising directory.

What OOH is good at, and what it isn’t
- Good at: being seen by everyone who uses a road, every day, without being skipped or blocked; making a brand look established; covering one area thoroughly (a launch in New Cairo, a branch opening in Alexandria); seasonal peaks such as Ramadan and the North Coast summer.
- Less good at: long messages, precise targeting by age or interest, and click-level measurement. Pair it with digital ads, a QR code or a memorable short link, and a promo code to see what it drove. Our billboards vs digital comparison goes deeper.
