Shop Signs in Egypt: Types, Design and Licensing (2026 Guide)

A shop sign is the one advertisement every business in Egypt has to buy. It is also the one most often designed in a hurry: the shop is fitted out, the opening date is close, and the sign gets whatever text fits the frame. This guide covers the main sign types, the design rules that decide whether anyone can read it from the street, and what the law requires before it goes up.

Types of shop sign

Light box (flex face)

A metal frame with a printed flex face and lights inside. It is the most common shop sign in Egypt because it is quick to make, lit at night, and the face can be reprinted when the branding changes. It looks flat next to lettered signs and the print fades in strong sun.

3D letters

Individual letters in acrylic, stainless steel or aluminium, fixed to the façade or to a cladding panel. They look more permanent and premium, and read well in daylight. They cost more per letter, so long names add up quickly.

Lit letters

3D letters with LEDs inside (face-lit) or behind them (back-lit, giving a halo on the wall). The best option for shops that trade in the evening, which in Egypt is most of them.

LED neon

Flexible LED strips shaped like neon tubes. Popular with cafés, restaurants and beauty salons for a logo or a short phrase. It uses far less power than glass neon and survives knocks better.

Screens

An LED screen above or beside the shop lets you change offers daily. It is the most expensive option and needs someone to manage the content, so it suits chains and pharmacies more than a single shop.

Shop sign design: rules that work on an Egyptian street

  • The name first, and big. People decide in a second or two whether you are what they are looking for. One name, one line describing what you sell, nothing else on the main sign.
  • Size the letters for the distance. A common sign-industry rule of thumb is about 2.5 cm of letter height for every 3 m of reading distance. A sign meant to be read from across a 15 m street needs letters of roughly 12–13 cm at the very least.
  • Strong contrast. Dark on light or light on dark. Avoid red on green, blue on black, and photographs behind text.
  • A readable Arabic font. Decorative calligraphy looks good on a business card and becomes unreadable at a distance. Choose a clear Naskh or a modern Kufi, and keep the English and Arabic names the same visual weight if you show both.
  • Plan for night. Check how the sign looks lit, from a car, at 9 pm. Many signs that look fine on the design screen disappear at night.
  • Leave out the phone numbers. Nobody can note a number from a moving car. Put the phone, the social accounts and the delivery apps on the door or the window instead.
  • Test it full size. Before production, print the design and look at it from where your customers will be: the opposite pavement, the traffic light, the microbus stop.

Licensing your shop sign

Law 208 of 2020 on regulating advertisements on public roads applies to signs as well as billboards. The essentials:

  • A licence is required before any sign goes up (Article 3). You apply to the competent authority: the local unit (your district), the new-city authority in new cities, or the roads authority on its roads.
  • 60 days to decide. If the authority doesn't decide within 60 days of a complete application, the law counts that as approval.
  • Valid up to three years, renewable.
  • The fee is capped at EGP 10,000 for issuing or renewing the licence (Article 5). The amount itself is set by the authority.
  • Penalties for an unlicensed sign: a fine of two to three times the cost of the works, removal, and double the licence fee (Article 9).

Our full guide to sign and billboard licensing under Law 208 of 2020 covers exemptions, who the competent authority is, and what to ask your district. Requirements and fees vary by district, so confirm with yours before you order the sign. This is general information, not legal advice.

When the shop sign is not enough

A sign only works on people who already pass your door. To reach the next street, the main road or the whole district, a billboard near the shop is the next step. Small 3×4 m street boards in Cairo and Giza are listed from around EGP 8,000 to 20,000 a month; see our billboard price guide for real prices, or browse boards near you in Cairo, Giza and Alexandria.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a licence for my shop sign in Egypt?

Yes. Law 208 of 2020 says no advertisement or sign may be placed without a licence from the competent authority, which for most shops is the local district (الحي) or, in new cities, the city authority. The exemptions are narrow: property for-sale or for-rent signs, public-authority notices, non-profit signs related to their purpose, and signs for public occasions.

How much is the shop sign licence fee?

The law lets the head of the competent authority set the fee for issuing or renewing a sign licence, up to a maximum of EGP 10,000. The exact amount depends on your district, so ask there. The separate site-use charge that authorities collect for advertising spaces does not apply to signs on privately owned buildings.

How long does a shop sign licence last?

Up to three years, renewable. The authority must decide within 60 days of a complete application; if it does not, the law treats the silence as approval.

What happens if I put up a sign without a licence?

The law sets a fine of two to three times the cost of the works, removal of the sign at your expense, restoring the place to its original state, and paying double the licence fee.
